London to Burford

London to Burford

After three days in London we picked up our hire car from St Pancras so we could drive to The Cotswolds. Went through the usual deal, pay more, we can upgrade you, can do a much better deal than the one you’ve booked… Blah! Blah! blah! Please just take our money and give us a car. After much tooing and froing we ended up with a Skoda Rapid, nice four door auto with sat nav. And no it’s not pronounced Raapid as we Aussies would, it’s pronounce Repiiid.

London now has a congestion tax of £11 in the CBD and the road we were using to leave London skirts the boarder of the CBD for most of the way out of the city. Great advice from the rental car staff was  ‘don’t turn left’.

Managed to crawl our way out of town, onto M40 then crawl past Oxford to arrive at our destination right on time.

We are staying in the Limetree Apartment at The Mill House which is exactly as the name describes, the old mill, with a mill stream passing underneath, with resident ducks and squirrels.

We love Burford with its abundance of quaint little pubs and beautiful listed cottages. The whole town is listed so all new builds must be built from the local stone.

First night we were invited to a jazz concert featuring Gabrielle Ducomble. The concert was held in the town’s new Concert Hall that from the outside looked like it had been there for a century, with the inside very modern.
This little town hosts a number of festivals with their jazz concerts being a monthly event.

They still hold their March every year dressed in costumes from the era when Oliver Cromwell ordered the execution of the three leaders of the Levellers who sort shelter in the Church after being defeated in battle with Cromwell’s army.

Weather is still very fickle. Sunny one day, overcast the next. But with central heating and double glazing, who cares. Off to the pub again tonight. More bubbles, more good food, more laughter with the locals who remember us from our earlier visits in 2012 and 2016. A suggestion was that we should move there. Got a spare couple of mil anyone? It could buy a small two bed renovator, but it will be listed so no modernising it.
